I Don’t Want a Goldfish
I want a new pet, but not a dog or a cat,
No gerbils or goldfish or polka dot rats.
I want a new pet, but not just any,
What should I get ? There’s just too many.
There are cats and dogs and little white mice,
Goldfish and frogs, and bunnies are nice.
Gerbils and hamsters are ok for some,
Lizards and snakes, and cows in the sun.
But I want something else, these just won’t do,
I want something different, exciting and new.
If only there could be a pet so small,
I could keep it in my pocket and hide it from all.
But if my pocket ever ripped and I got a hole in my pants
I’d lose my little pet for being as small as an ant.
What if I could own a gorilla so large,
We could make roller-skates from the neighbor’s two cars
But I bet my gorilla would eat all of our food,
And mom would send him away for being so rude.
Someday I’ll have a pet who gives me candy and sweets.
I’d love my pet who gives me these treats.
But if I ate too much candy I’d get a painful toothache
And would have to go to the dentist, and that I would hate
Or maybe I’ll get a pet monster instead,
To scare my big brother under his bed.
But if he got scared, he’d scream and he’d shout
And then he’d tell mom and she’d kick it out.
If I had a pet dinosaur, giant and tall,
We’d travel the world and walk over walls.
But if my dinosaur had to sleep in my yard
I’d have to make a really big doghouse and that would be hard.
Or maybe a pet dragon who could fly and breathe fire,
And I could be a knight and wear armored attire.
Then me and my dragon could fly around the world.
We’d fly by my school and scare all the girls.
But I bet mom would get mad if he burned our house down.
And she’d send me to my room where I would frown.
All of these pets seemed nice at first
But if I get them for real, they seem like the worst
So maybe I won’t get any new pets or friends.
Instead I think it’s more fun to pretend.
